From Hila Sedighi’s defense in court:

….Now the judge is sitting across from me, and I don’t fear him or his authority. I am not afraid of the trial, the verdict, imprisonment, or solitary isolation. I am not afraid of any interrogator, threats, or any terror imposed. …They don’t seem to be aware that poets put aside sanity when they make love. I am not afraid of the rulers of this country. What I am afraid of is the dominant culture in this country. I am not concerned about politics, or which party or fraction will rule. I am concerned about the pleasantness of this land. I want freedom and peace for the people of this land, where a land without its people is valueless and dead. For this reason I am afraid of animosity and revenge. I am afraid of the ever deepening of these rifts, against your neighbor and being selfish. History repeats itself and perhaps predicting Iran’s future is not so difficult; What can be avoided is not the repetition of history but the taking root of our culture…
